Core Beliefs

Updated: Nov 22, 2022

(part of CBT Cognitive behaviour therapy) CBT focuses on current thoughts, behaviour, and emotions/mood.

You and I have different thoughts or we act differently in same situation it's because we have different sets of core beliefs.

Core beliefs are a person's most central ideas about themselves, others, and the world, that influence on us. Core beliefs determine how you perceive and interpret the world around you. It is very important for a person because they determine what degree you see yourself worthy, safe, competent, powerful, and loved. Negative beliefs about yourself are deadly for your self-acceptance and self-esteem.

We look negative core beliefs (as those are the ones to be improved) - i.e:-

I am unlovable/unlikeable

I am a victim

I am failure

I am not good enough

I am bound to be rejected

I am different from other people

I am unwanted

I am worthless/unacceptable

I am dangerous/toxic

We build certain rules and assumptions by the experience we learn in day-to-day lives that defines our personality and behavior.

It is said that taking an example of tree-like roots are out core beliefs, trunk of the tree is rules and assumptions and leaves the outcome are our thoughts and behaviour.

The rules that we make are the statements starting with -

I should...

I must...

And we make assumptions stating with - If...., then....,

Hence rules and assumptions influence our behaviour.

This concludes that whatever we make choices or the rules and assumptions build out core beliefs. It depends on an individual to build its foundation either strong or weak. That, therefore, replicates individual's personality and behavior.
