What is substance induced Psychosis, Why does it occur

Substance-induced psychosis is a mental condition characterized by hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking triggered by the use or withdrawal from drugs or alcohol. It can mimic symptoms of schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders but is directly caused by substance use.

Why It Occurs:

1. Neurochemical Imbalance: Substances like stimulants (e.g., cocaine, meth), hallucinogens (e.g., LSD), or even excessive alcohol can disrupt brain neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate, leading to psychotic symptoms.

2. Toxicity: Some drugs can be toxic to the brain, especially in high doses, causing the brain to malfunction temporarily, leading to psychosis.

3. Withdrawal: Abrupt cessation from substances, particularly alcohol or benzodiazepines, can trigger psychosis, especially in those with severe dependence.

4. Underlying Mental Health Issues: Individuals with pre-existing mental health conditions may be more vulnerable to experiencing psychosis when using or withdrawing from substances.

Symptoms typically resolve after the substance is cleared from the system, but in some cases, prolonged or chronic use can lead to long-lasting or recurrent psychotic episodes.
